Understanding Bandwidth and Disk Space

Bandwidth and disk space are two fundamental resources of any hosting plan. Understanding them helps you choose the right plan and avoid unexpected issues.

What Is Disk Space?

Disk space (or storage) is the total amount of data your hosting account can store on the server. This includes:

  • Website files (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, videos)
  • Databases (MySQL data)
  • Email messages stored on the server
  • Backups stored in your hosting account
  • Log files generated by the server

What Is Bandwidth?

Bandwidth (or data transfer) is the total amount of data transferred between your server and visitors over a given period (usually monthly). Bandwidth is consumed when:

  • A visitor loads your web pages (downloading HTML, CSS, JS, images)
  • Files are downloaded from your site
  • Email is sent or received through your hosting
  • FTP transfers upload or download files
  • API requests are processed

How Much Do You Need?

Disk Space Estimates:

Website TypeEstimated Storage
Simple blog1–5 GB
Small business site2–10 GB
E-commerce store5–20 GB
Media-heavy site20–100+ GB

Bandwidth Estimates:

A rough formula: Average page size × Monthly page views = Monthly bandwidth

For example: 2 MB average page × 10,000 views/month = ~20 GB bandwidth/month

Checking Your Usage in cPanel

  1. Disk Usage: Navigate to Files > Disk Usage in cPanel to see a breakdown of storage consumption by directory.
  2. Bandwidth: Go to Metrics > Bandwidth to view your monthly data transfer usage.
  3. Dashboard: The cPanel sidebar often shows a quick summary of disk and bandwidth usage.

Reducing Disk Space Usage

  • Compress images before uploading (use tools like TinyPNG or ShortPixel)
  • Delete old backups and unused files
  • Clean up old email messages and empty trash folders
  • Remove unused databases and database tables
  • Optimize databases using phpMyAdmin’s “Optimize Table” feature
  • Purge old log files regularly

Reducing Bandwidth Usage

  • Enable caching (browser caching and server-side caching)
  • Use a CDN (Content Delivery Network) like Cloudflare to serve static assets
  • Optimize images — use modern formats like WebP
  • Minify CSS, JavaScript, and HTML to reduce file sizes
  • Enable Gzip/Brotli compression in your .htaccess or server configuration
  • Block hotlinking to prevent other sites from using your bandwidth

What Happens When You Exceed Limits?

Depending on your hosting plan and provider:

  • Your website may become temporarily unavailable
  • You may receive a warning email asking you to reduce usage
  • Additional charges may apply on some plans
  • Your account may be suspended until the next billing cycle
