Adding DNS Records and Templates

Sometimes, adding DNS records can be confusing, especially with so many options for using your domain name out there. To make the process a little easier, many domain registrars offer pre-made DNS templates. You may find templates for popular website builders and email providers, including GitHub Pages, Google Workspace, Office 365, Shopify, Squarespace, Tumblr, Weebly, WordPress.com, and more.
To Add a DNS Template
- Log in to your domain registrar account.
- Navigate to your domains list.
- Click the domain name you want to add the DNS records to.
- Click Manage DNS Records.
- Look for a DNS Templates button or section.
- Select the template you want from the drop-down menu and click Update DNS records.
Note: Some templates will ask you to enter extra information, like the subdomain or verification key. You will need to get this information from your hosting or email provider.
To Add a DNS Record Manually
- Log in to your domain registrar account.
- Navigate to your domains list.
- Click the domain name you want to add the DNS records to.
- Click Manage DNS Records.
- Select the record type from the Type drop-down menu (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.).
- Enter the Host value (if applicable).
- Enter the Answer value (the destination IP address, domain, or text value).
- Set the TTL (Time to Live) — 300 seconds is the default.
- Click Add Record.
Important Notes
- To manage DNS records through your registrar, your domain must be using your registrar’s nameservers. If you are using custom nameservers (pointing to a third-party DNS provider), you will need to manage DNS records through that provider instead.
- If you see a warning that your domain is not using default nameservers, you will need to update your nameservers before DNS records or templates will work.
- DNS changes can take up to 24–48 hours to fully propagate across the internet.
