Unlocking Your Domain for Transfer

Before you can transfer a domain between registrars, the domain must be in an unlocked state. Most registrars enable a transfer lock by default to protect against unauthorized transfers. Here is how to unlock your domain.

What Is a Domain Lock?

A domain lock (also called registrar lock or transfer lock) is a security feature that prevents unauthorized domain transfers. When a domain is locked, any transfer request will be automatically denied. You must unlock the domain before the gaining registrar can successfully process a transfer.

How to Unlock at 10Corp

  1. Log in to your 10Corp account.
  2. Navigate to Domains → My Domains.
  3. Select the domain you wish to transfer.
  4. Find the Domain Lock or Transfer Lock toggle.
  5. Switch it to Unlocked or Off.
  6. Save your changes.

The unlock takes effect almost immediately, but some registrars may take up to 24 hours to update the registry.

Unlocking at Other Registrars

The process varies by registrar, but generally involves:

  • Logging in to your account dashboard.
  • Finding the domain management or settings section.
  • Locating the lock/security setting.
  • Disabling the transfer lock.

If you cannot find the unlock option, check your registrar’s help documentation or contact their support team.

Important Reminders

  • Only unlock when you are ready to transfer. Keeping a domain unlocked for extended periods reduces security.
  • Re-lock after transfer. Once the domain arrives at your new registrar, enable the transfer lock again to protect it.
  • Some extensions cannot be locked. Certain ccTLDs (country-code top-level domains) do not support registrar lock. In those cases, transfers rely solely on the authorization code.
