Change of Registrant (Domain Ownership Transfer)
Change of Registrant (Domain Ownership Transfer)
A change of registrant is different from a domain transfer between registrars. It involves changing the owner of a domain — the individual or organization listed as the registrant in the WHOIS database — while the domain may stay at the same registrar.
When Is a Change of Registrant Needed?
- Selling a domain to another person or company.
- Business name change or rebranding.
- Transferring ownership due to mergers, acquisitions, or restructuring.
- Correcting errors in the original registration details.
How to Change the Registrant at 10Corp
Step 1: Log In and Access Domain Settings
- Log in to your 10Corp account.
- Navigate to Domains → My Domains and select the domain.
- Go to the WHOIS or Contact Information section.
Step 2: Update Registrant Details
Modify the registrant fields that need to change:
- Registrant Name
- Organization
- Email Address
Step 3: Confirm the Change
After submitting the changes, ICANN’s Change of Registrant policy requires verification:
- An email is sent to both the old and new registrant email addresses.
- Both parties must confirm the ownership change.
- The change takes effect after both confirmations are received.
The 60-Day Lock After a Change of Registrant
Under ICANN policy, a change of registrant may trigger a 60-day transfer lock, preventing the domain from being transferred to another registrar during that period. Some registrars offer the option for both parties to opt out of this lock during the confirmation process.
Important Considerations
- Plan ahead — If you need to both change ownership and transfer registrars, complete the registrar transfer first, then change the registrant (or vice versa, accounting for the 60-day lock).
- Verify email addresses — Both the current and new registrant must have accessible email addresses to confirm the change.
- Document the transaction — For sales or business transfers, keep records of the ownership change for legal purposes.
Special Cases
- Minor corrections (such as fixing a typo) may not trigger the full change of registrant process at all registrars, but policies vary.
- Organization changes where the registrant name stays the same may be handled differently depending on the registrar.
- ccTLDs may have their own registrant change procedures that differ from ICANN’s rules.
Fees
Some registrars charge a fee for registrant changes, while others offer it at no cost. Check 10Corp’s current pricing or contact support for details.
